Prof. Wole Soyinka the Noble laureate in a lecture titled “ whither Nigeria? At the 2021 Obafemi Awolowo lecture, which was organized by the Obafemi Awolowo foundation.
The Noble Laureate, restated his position on restructuring Nigeria, he said the country cannot work under the present system of government, he emphasized on decentralization of power and governance, he pointed the current security challenges as one of the main reason Nigeria need to be restructured.
“There is consensus that this country wether in terms of governance, economic relations, security, educational policy, cultural policy, etc. requires restructuring. Even the word restructuring has been restructured in many directions in cogent expression which will mean the same thing for everybody”
“For me for instance, I emphasized decentralization, reconfiguration. We all know what we have now, what we have now is not working, it’s obvious and we cannot continue along the same line and say that it will work, it is a sign of madness”
Sometime in January, 2021 the prolific writer urged the national assembly to listen to calls from the restructuring of Nigeria, he lamented the state of corruption in the country.
“The law maker has the power and moral authority to respond to the calls if the presidency is not doing so”
