FG Gives Permission For N59.78bn Ogoni Cleaning Projects
Yesterday, the Federal Executive Council authorized two contracts for the development of a 100-bed specialty hospital in Ogoni and a center of excellence for environmental rehabilitation in Rivers State’s Kana Local Government Area. Mohammed Abdullahi, the environment minister, stated that the initiatives would promote effective and affordable methods for managing contamination and restoring the environment while promoting the health and welfare of persons who had been adversely affected by contamination in certain places. According to him, CCECC Nigeria Limited was given the contract for the building of the center of excellence, with a price tag of N41,472,263,848.60 and a 24-month completion window. He claimed that Messrs Tannit Medical Engineering Ltd was given the contract for the construction of the 100-bed specialized hospital in Ogoni for the sum of N18,308,463,225.37, plus 7.5% VAT, with a 24-month delivery window. Lai Mohammed, the minister of information and culture, reported that the aviation ministry received authorisation for the building of a 150-room female hostel at a cost of N2,244,713,424.56, inclusive of 7.5% VAT, with a 12-month completion window. He said that Messrs Best Houses Building Limited had been chosen to build the hostel at the Nigerian Institute of Aviation Technology in Zaria. According to Mohammed, the council also gave Kaura Motors permission to receive N383,968,500 from his ministry in order to complete the purchase of 13 operable vehicles for the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria within three weeks. The National Population Commission Census, which is scheduled to take place sometime in May, will also be covered by the operational vehicles, he added. “The operational vehicles will be used for the day-to-day operations of the FRCN and in particular, they’ll be used report, gather news, with respect to the various cases in tribunal,” he said.

NYSC at 50: FG praises corps members for their contributions to national development
Featured The Federal Government has praised the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, for its contributions to the country’s overall growth, stating that its existence has been a strong tool for socioeconomic development and national unity throughout its 50 years of existence. Mr. Sunday Dare, Minister of Youth and Sports Development, announced this in Abuja during the opening ceremony of the 2023 NYSC Annual Management Conference, themed, Optimising NYSC Operations at 50 for National Development. Although stating that the government would continue to support the scheme for its responsibilities in national development and youth empowerment, the minister also emphasized the need to modify NYSC in order to improve service delivery and address the challenges of 21st century youngsters as potential entrepreneurs. He charged the conference attendees with “taking the NYSC on another trajectory of progress, digital revolution, helping and moulding the young within one year to be better citizens for national development and national unity.” Brig Gen Y.D. Ahmed, Director General of NYSC, noted in his welcoming address that the NYSC has been a reference point for other organizations since its creation in 1973, owing to its critical roles in promoting national unity and integration. He urged crucial stakeholders to fulfill their statutory obligations to the Scheme and to provide a significant number of corps members with start-up money for self-sufficiency after completing the NYSC entrepreneurship trainings. The DG went on to say that, if established, the proposed NYSC Trust Fund would make the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Programme more functional by providing training facilities and start-up funding to corps entrepreneurs. In his presentation, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Alhaji Muhammed Musa Bello, praised the Scheme’s multiple innovations and positive advances to date. The minister, whose address was read aloud by Hajia Hadiza Mohammed Kabir, Mandate Secretary, Federal Capital Territory Administration, added, “The nation certainly looks forward to the Scheme to continue to provide the essential manpower for its accelerated growth.” Participants in the conference came from the Scheme’s 37 state/FCT secretariats, area offices, and other formations around the country.
Answer for the N400 billion spent on general elections, say civil society organizations to INEC.
A coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) that observed the general elections in 2023 has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to justify the N400 billion spent on the exercise. The CSOs, who met in Abuja on Tuesday for a post-election retreat to evaluate the recently finished exercise, reiterated in a statement published at the end of the meeting that the electoral umpire should also explain why it was unable to upload results into IREV. The Executive Chairman of CICSD, Hon Kunle Yusuf, issued a press release in which he stated that they resolved: “That INEC, as the institution in charge of the voting system, explain to Nigerians why the BVASs developed so many flaws.” “INEC should explain why the results were not submitted to IREV.” “In addition, INEC should use her office to prosecute election criminals.” “INEC should improve its interaction with civil society organizations.” “Indec should be better prepared for the approaching elections in Balyesa, Imo, and Kogi States.” “That the EFCC also investigate those individuals involved in vote buying and inducement during the election.” “The Federal Government should investigate the establishment of a special court for election offenders.” “INEC should justify spending over $400 billion of tax payers’ money on a project that has just ended.” CSOs, according to Hon. Yusuf, are “real ambassadors, authentic representatives, and true defenders of democracy.” Despite praising their efforts, he added, “Wr have seen what transpired with the 2023 elections.” Your argument is that of those who saw the good, terrible, and ugly sides of this election. “We appreciate what you’ve done. Your reports have helped in so many ways,” he continued, hoping that the report produced at the end of the retreat will aid the country’s democratic journey.
151 Nigerians are evacuated from Libya
Another group of Nigerians who were stranded in Libya have been rescued by the Federal Government and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). A total of 151 people were flown out of Benghazi as the government continued its voluntary evacuation, according to a statement made on Tuesday in Abuja by Ambassador Kabiru Musa, Charge d’affaires of the Nigerian Mission in Libya. The evacuees, who included 71 women, 54 men, 14 kids, and 13 infants, landed tonight at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport. With the Mission in Libya, the IOM and Ministry of Foreign Affairs deported about 4,000 unauthorized migrants from Nigeria in 2022. Musa stated that the evacuation on March 28 was the first of 2023 and that further drills would follow in the days and weeks to come. He added that voluntary repatriation gives people who want to return the chance to do so safely and reunite with their families, hinting further that certain Nigerians residing illegally in Libya have experienced really cruel treatment. On Wednesday, more Nigerians will be evacuated from Tripoli, while another batch is planned to leave Misrata on April 3.
