The death toll from the current cholera outbreak in the Federal Capital Territory has risen from fifty-four to sixty in the last one week.
The Minister of State, Federal Capital Territory, Ramatu Aliyu who confirmed this during the continuation of community sensitization campaign on cholera and other severe outbreaks in Pyakasa and Gwagwa communities, also noted that the number of suspected cases has risen from six hundred and four to nearly seven hundred cases in seventy-two hours.
The Minister was represented by the Acting Executive Secretary of FCT Primary Health Care Board, Iwot Ndaeyo, who provided a breakdown of how the suspected cases spread across the six area councils.
According to Doctor Iwot, Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, recorded about two hundred and eighty-one cases, with twenty-two deaths, while Bwari Area Council recorded at least one hundred and thirty-four suspected cases, with twenty-two deaths.
Others are Gwagwalada Area Council, which has recorded two hundred and twenty suspected cases with nine deaths, Kuje Area Council has recorded twenty-three cases with four deaths, while Kwali Area Council has recorded thirty-seven suspected cases, with three deaths.
The FCT Administration and the area councils insist, sensitization about cholera has been intensified to contain the spread of the disease, and provide treatment to those affected by the disease.
