The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that the supplemental elections deriving from the Presidential and National Assembly elections on February 25 will not be held concurrently with the governorship elections slated for Saturday, March 18.
Festus Okoye, the Commission’s spokesperson, signed the statement on Friday.
Clarifying the social media buzz, Mr Okoye stated that the only elections that would take place alongside the state polls would be the postponed Enugu East Senatorial District election and the Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben Federal Constituency of Edo.
Oyibo Chukwu, the Labour Party candidate in the Enugu East race, was assassinated just days before the poll, leading INEC to postpone the vote.
In addition, on election day, INEC announced the postponement of the Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben House of Representatives elections due to the absence of the Labour Party’s logo on the vote papers.
The INEC spokeswoman stated that the supplemental elections would be held at a later date.
“Our attention of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been drawn to a news report that conveyed the impression that the Commission intends to conduct supplementary elections arising from the Presidential and National Assembly elections together with the Governorship and State Assembly elections that will take place on Saturday 18 March 2023.
This is not factual,” he stated in a statement obtained by The AGN Press.
