More bodies recovered from Ibechie boat mishap in Lagos State

Eleven additional bodies were recovered Sunday during the search and rescue operations by emergency responders bringing the total to 17 casualties from the boat mishap at Ibeshe, near mile 2 in Lagos, South-West Nigeria.

The 19-passenger fiber boat had 16 passengers on board when it capsized on Friday night at ibashe  along ojo axis of Lagos.

According to officials from both the National Inland Waterways Authority and Lagos State Inland Authority, the boat captain violated the regulations when he set sail at 7.45pm Friday.

Unconfirmed source attributed the possible cause to a high tide that caused the boat to drift to a stationary barge which caused the boat to overturn the passengers into the lagoon.

It is unclear if the passengers wore their mandatory life jackets as stipulated by the authorities concerned when the boat left the shores.
