NEC orders Sokoto REC’s immediate resignation.

Ahead of the nationwide governorship and house of assembly elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has ordered Dr. Nura Ali, the Resident Electoral Commission supervisor for Sokoto State, to resign and be replaced by Hauwa Aliyu Kangiwa, the commission’s administrative secretary for the state.

This is mentioned in a letter dated March 6th, which the state commission’s secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, delivered to the office of the commission.

Recall that the commission’s chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, recently pledged to deal with any staff members or ad hoc staff members who contributed to the presidential election’s failure before the country’s final round of elections in a meeting with state RECs to prepare for the upcoming governorship elections.

The commission orders the REC to leave office immediately until further notice, according to the letter that was provided to our reporter by a source in the state commission.

“This is to tell you of the commission’s decision for you (Dr. Nura Ali), Resident Electoral Commissioner, Sokoto State, to stay away from the commission’s office in Sokoto State immediately till further notice,” reads the letter bearing no INEC/SCE/442/V.II.

“The administrative secretary is asked to immediately assume full control of the INEC, Sokoto State office.”

The commission orders Hauwa Aliyu Kangiwa, the administrative secretary of the commission in the state, to assume complete control of the commission in the state with immediate effect in a separate letter that our reporter was able to see.

Hauwa was instructed to assume full responsibility for all administrative and election-related matters unless otherwise directed by the commission in a separate letter that was signed by the same commission secretary.

The letter further instructed her to communicate with Professor Muhammad Sani Kaita, the Supervisory National Commissioner, for more clarifications as needed.
