Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, made a statement on Friday in Abuja regarding President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitment to a peaceful handover of power on May 29, 2023. Shehu emphasized that Buhari would not be swayed into altering the constitution or engaging in activities that could undermine the peaceful transition of power.
During Buhari’s observation of the Tafsir at the State House mosque, Shehu stated that nobody would dare to suggest that Buhari should stay in power beyond his term. Shehu also clarified that discussions about an interim government did not originate from the presidency and that Nigerians could be assured that the handover date would not change.
The statement comes after the Presidential Campaign Councils of the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party called on the Department of State Services to apprehend those plotting an interim national government. The Department of State Service had previously revealed that some individuals were planning to stall the inauguration of President-elect Tinubu and install an interim national government instead.
Despite the controversy surrounding the election results, Shehu emphasized that Buhari was committed to leaving office on May 29 and that nothing would stop him from doing so. Nigerians can rest assured that the peaceful transition of power will take place as scheduled.
